The Problem with Spiders
The biggest problem with spiders is they need to be fed…
We have a neighbor who knew I was interested in photographing bugs, so she delivered a jumping spider to me. We immediately sprung into action, buying a small terrarium. It looked to0 plain so we went to the thrift shop and bought some toys for Fang. Also, they need to be fed… so I used a butterfly net to catch some flies. Not all of the flies were successfully transferred into the spider home, as many escaped into our home.
Then winter sets in and no flies are available. Now you need to go to PetSmart® to buy crickets. But crickets also need to be fed, celery and peanut butter. Then the crickets die and stink, another trip to PetSmart® . Somehow, Covid caused a run on crickets and this convenient source of food was not always available.
The next hurdle was to find a spider sitter when we went on a vacation. But the ultimate problem with spiders is they die. RIP Fang, you are missed.
Lots of Entertainment
It was much fun releasing flies and crickets into the cage and watching ‘Fang’ devour his meal. Each December, the camera club I belong to, members submit a slideshow of their work. My slideshow in 2021 consisted of a 3 minute movie of Fang and a Christmas message. CLICK the link below.

Feeding them is bad enough …. but don’t get me started on cleaning the litter box!!
What a great production. Love the smile at the end!
Love it!!!!
Thank you Bonnie, next is Amsterdam then India. After that I’ll concentrate on macro photography at home. I’m still in awe of the travel you have done. Just looked for your old website and did not fine it. I understand it can be quite an undertaking to restart your posts. What adventures you two had…
