Acorn Woodpeckers

Acorn Woodpeckers

My Mom moved to Ruidoso, New Mexico in 1995.  She had 15 wonderful years here, enjoying the mountains, friends and working thousands of hours at the local Pink Lady Thrift Shop.  She was known for cleaning up old dolls of all shapes and sizes for resale in the second-hand store, making them available to little girls who may not have otherwise had a nice doll.  The local newspaper ran stories on more than one occasion about the Doll Lady of Ruidoso.  She passed away in September of 2010, and three years later my sister and I have finally sold the house.

Gayle and I are now where we have worked hard to be….. homeless, or home free and able to travel the world where we wish, when we wish.  We do not yet seem to really be into this mode of living.  All we have done is book a one-way cruise from Florida to Rome.  No return cruise and no places to stay during our five months in Europe.  We continue to pursue the re-positioning cruise listings……  Did you know you can cruise from Denmark to Singapore? Who knew?

So good-bye to many good memories, Christmases with my Mom, golfing at the Links, summer BBQ’s and my favorite home-made molasses crinkle cookies.  Our new adventure being homeless begins….

New Mexico Magazine Winning Portfolio

New Mexico Magazine

New Mexico Magazine

I was very proud when I learned I had won the 12th annual New Mexico Magazine Photography contest.  As the article states, this was a goal of mine for several years.

Here is the article from the February 2013 New Mexico Magazine for the 2012 contest I won.

By studying the past winners, I could see that they were not after the typical or famous iconic images from the state.  They seemed to like photos that were beautiful, interesting and would not necessarily be associated with New Mexico.  In the February 2013 New Mexico Magazine they had room for only five of the submitted images.  Unlike past years, the judges did not meet in a room and look at each portfolio at a time.  Instead, this year the judges looked at the images separately, rated them and then points by photographer were summed up.   Here are all ten images submitted, the winning portfolio.

Pie Town Revisited

Welcome to Pie Town

Welcome to Pie Town

The Original Owners have returned to Pie Town, New Mexico, USA!!  They have expanded their hours and menu, great for the weary traveler in this western part of New Mexico.  I just think it is such a quaint town and restaurant, in the middle of nowhere, I want everybody to know about it.  If your one of the lucky few, you will get to experience the green chile apple pie as well.

IT'S PIE

IT’S PIE

Pie Town, New Mexico

Pie Town, New Mexico mainly consists of two great cafes serving fresh, hot home-made pies and a museum.  While they are at opposite ends of the town and on opposite sides of the street, they do not seem to compete much with each other as one was open on the weekends and the other on weekdays.

At the Pie Town Cafe we had their famous New Mexican Apple Pie which has spicy hot New Mexico green chilies and pinion nuts a-la-mode.  Not a combination I would have thought of but it was great and I would have it again, unless they have something even more unusual at the time….
