Dingle Peninsula, Ireland

Dingle Sports Bar

Dingle was our base for exploring this well-traveled peninsula and its fishing villages.  Dingle seems to have the right mix of locals and good restaurants to serve the many tourists.  While we were there we were often rained on five or more times a day.  This peninsula is dotted with many smaller fishing towns, all having several nice pubs and restaurants.  Late into the evening we could hear what sounded like an entire bar singing Beatles songs.

Dingle RoadsMy days were filled with traveling with a photographer friend, driving variations of the same basic roads in search of good light, waiting for the rain to stop and skies to clear.  Many of these roads were only a single lane wide, but were used as two-way roads.  Small pullouts dotted the lanes where the courteous drivers would pull over to let others pass.  Again, there was no horn honking, only cooperation and politeness.  In some places the bushes on both sides of the road would scrape against the car.

Just as in the Ring of Kerry, several of these towns were brightly painted and full of overflowing flower pots, vying for the prestigious title of “Tidy Town” of Ireland.  All this made for some fine photographic opportunities.  We did not see a hint of graffiti in Ireland or in Scotland.
